The 'Perfect Fit' Is a Myth. Here's What Good Recruiters Know.
Every hiring manager says they want the perfect fit. Experienced recruiters have learned to look for something better.
We hear it constantly: "We're looking for the perfect fit." And we understand why. You want someone who hits the ground running, checks every box, and stays for the long term. That feels like a reasonable bar.
But the perfect fit, as most hiring teams define it, rarely exists. And the search for them often means passing over someone genuinely excellent.
The Problem with the Perfect Candidate Profile
Rigid checklists cause specific problems:
- They confuse experience with capability: someone who has done exactly this before isn't necessarily someone who will do it well in your context
- They discount coachability: the quality that actually determines long-term performance
- They extend searches unnecessarily: every added requirement narrows the pool and delays the hire
- They lead to "good enough" fallbacks: waiting for perfection and eventually settling for whoever is still available
What to Look for Instead
We focus on what we call progressive fit: candidates who are capable enough to perform from day one and adaptable enough to grow with the role and the organisation. Three qualities matter more than any checklist:
- Coachability: do they take feedback well and adjust quickly?
- Alignment: do their values and working style match your team's?
- Potential: are they visibly growing and motivated by what's next?
Skills can be developed. Tools can be learned. Culture fit and growth mindset are significantly harder to build in someone who doesn't arrive with them.
The Best Employees Are Often Shaped After Hiring
Most high performers at any company weren't perfect fits on paper. They had the right foundation, the right attitude, and the right environment to grow into the role.
We don't help clients find perfect. We help them find people who will stick, scale, and shape the future of their teams. That's a higher standard than a checklist, and a more reliable one.
